2D Artists
- Compositor
The position is responsible for working collaboratively with the Visual Effects Supervisors and Compositing Supervisor. The Compositor will be responsible for integrating seamlessly elements from different sources into final composites for use in a TV series or feature films.
Position Summary
Candidate will perform tasks such as tracking, blue/green screen matte extraction, colour correction, paint fixes, roto and assembly of live action and 3D elements and demonstrate strong communication skills and collaboration with other members of the visual effects team.
Responsibilities
Creatively combine all the elements into the final image, ensuring that the established style of the project is respected and continuity is maintained.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years professional experience in TV and film industry
- Must have the ability to use Shake or other tools that produce digital composites such as Nuke or Flame
- Must present a show reel highlighting candidate's eye for colour, lighting, attention to detail and composition
- The candidate must have the ability to work autonomously and meet deadlines
- The candidate must have strong communication skills and ability to take directions
- Experience working in a Linux or other UNIX environment a plus

3D Artists
- Animator
This position is responsible for animating/manipulating characters in a simple and efficient manner.
Position Summary
The Animator brings an idea to life by seamlessly incorporating digital animation with live-action, working closely with modelers and riggers to design, build, and animate characters (organic or otherwise) that support the full range of expression called for.
The successful candidate must be technically proficient and experienced in creating photorealistic animation. Meeting deadlines set by leads and production, the animator must be highly motivated, creative and energetic, with senior skills in character motion and camera animation. Excellent problem solving, communication and listening skills are vital, as is the ability to work collaboratively and push his creative approach to evolve with technology.
Responsibilities
The Animator is responsible for executing the performance of digital characters within a shot. Working with Animation Supervisor and Leads to create believable characters by defining character personalities, creating fluid motion and organic movement collaboratively with team members while taking directions professionally.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years professional experience in TV and film industry
- Experience with Maya is essential
- Experience working in a Linux or other UNIX environment
- Must have an excellent understanding of animation principles, specifically related to creature animation
- Knowledge of MEL Scripting and Rigging a plus
- CG Supervisor
The ideal candidate is specialized in Maya and capable of working hands-on as well as in a managerial position. Prior CG Supervisory experience producing A-level visual effects for both film and TV industries required.
Position Summary
The CG Supervisor is artistic and technically driven with experience managing all aspects of CG production, from Modeling through to Final Render. Communicating directly with the Creative Director and Producer, will act as the Producer's CG representative to the production staff, ensuring that tasks are assigned, understood and completed, as per instructed, in order to maintain the quality and style as established.
Responsibilities
- Technically interpret the Director's vision to the CG departments, ensuring that the highest quality of work is achieved within the parameters of the schedule and budget
- Reporting any concerns with deliverables, performance or ability of any personnel in order to meet contracted requirements and deadlines
- Manage all CG departments by providing clear direction and strong leadership, setting clear objectives, monitoring their process, progress and results
- Determining, modifying and maintaining the most effective and efficient technical approach and workflow
- Assist the Department Leads with researching, developing, and implementing new techniques
- Implement team building, career development, and performance reviews for all CG departments
- Mentoring and training as necessary
- Participation in employee recruitment and interviews
Qualifications
- 5 years of professional production experience in feature film or television work
- 2-year minimum successful experience as a senior TD with leadership responsibilities
- Shows great understanding in most CG production areas, i.e. rendering techniques, shader development, scripting, effects design, lighting, character set up, etc.
- Extensive knowledge of computer animation packages — Maya, 3Delight preferred
- Must be a skilled decision maker, problem solver and an exceptional communicator
- Must have a positive, team approach and be able to work well with a wide range of personality types
- Layout/Tracker
This position is responsible for staging every shot and plotting the action that will take place within each scene.
Position Summary
The Layout Artist should be extremely film literate and able to meet the filmic needs of a production. Must have a thorough understanding of breaking down 2D storyboards into 3D shots using production designs and models as reference, selecting camera angles and plotting camera moves.
Responsibilities
Ensure everything to be animated is set up appropriately, including characters, props or parts of the background that need to move. Establish lengths of shots within a scene and create a low-resolution first pass of a layout reel for review, fix any necessary changes and pass onto the animators.
Qualifications
- Demonstrable artistic skills including a strong sense of composition and perspective, good use of light, shadow and color; the ability to create atmosphere and good understanding of editing
- Thorough knowledge of Maya
- Good understanding of the principles of cinematography including use of lenses, positioning and moving the camera, etc;
- Ability to problem solve
- Prior experience producing A-level visual effects for both film and TV industries required.
- Rigger/Character TD
This position is responsible for adding controls for movement to a static model, thus allowing animators to manipulate the character in a simple and efficient way.
Position Summary
Rigging is a creative form of problem solving, in which various tools are used to achieve a specific deformation of a model with a concise set of animation controls. The Rigger (sometimes called a Character TD) works closely with animators to design, build, and maintain rigs for characters (organic or otherwise) that support the full range of expression called for.
The successful candidate will be technically proficient and experienced in building different types of rigging setups, including spine, skin, muscle, and cloth. A thorough understanding of materials and anatomy is an asset, as is knowledge of MEL or Python scripting. Excellent problem solving, communication and listening skills are vital, as is the ability to work collaboratively.
Responsibilities
Designing, building, and maintaining rigs for characters and props; assisting in the design of a scriptable rigging system for the studio; working with animators to design control systems that produce the desired deformations and range of expression; exploring the use of new techniques and tools.
Qualifications
- At least 1 year of experience rigging characters (organic and mechanical) in a production environment
- Highly proficient in Maya, specifically in the areas of model rigging and binding, constraints, simulation, and the ability to apply these to the setup of various types of digital characters for animation
- Good knowledge of MEL or Python scripting
- Familiarity with materials and anatomy (human and other).
- Experience with cloth, muscles, and other types of rigging tools
- Artistic ability is an asset

- Shader Developer
This position is responsible for augmenting and managing the shading infrastructure of the studio, as well as working with artists in look development. The Shader Developer reports to the Director of Software Technology and the CG Supervisor.
Position Summary
The Shader Developer works closely with TDs, the surfacing department, and the lighting department to maintain and augment a shading architecture that supports component reuse, layered surfaces, procedural texture generation, texture projection, and scene relighting.
The successful candidate will be highly technically proficient, have a background in mathematics and BRDFs, and extensive experience writing shaders for a large digital production. Excellent problem solving, communication and listening skills are vital, as is the ability to work collaboratively.
Responsibilities
With input from the surfacing and lighting departments, architects and builds new shading components, and maintains the shading infrastructure of the studio; actively researches new approaches and techniques in programmable shading; co-ordinates with production management to schedule and deploy shader releases.
Qualifications
- Graduate degree in computer graphics, or equivalent experience
- 2 years of experience developing programmable shaders
- Proficient in programmable shading languages such as RSL, VEX, Cg, or GLSL
- Experience with component architectures or node-based workflows
- Experience working in a Linux, Mac OS X or other UNIX environment
- Highly proficient with production renderers such as RenderMan, 3Delight, Mantra, or Mental Ray
- Proficient with 3D software such as Maya or Houdini

The I/O position works directly under the IT Director and is responsible for all media transfer between Lumière Visual Effects, partners and clients. The ideal candidate is a dedicated, fast learning individual with great attention to detail.
Position Summary
Log audio and visual material received, keeping ongoing and detailed records, as instructed.
Responsibilities
Input
- Logging and organizing all editorial material that enters the facility
- Capture digital plates for inserting into client edits and adapting for internal use.

- Software Developer
The successful software developer demonstrates experience in the VFX Industry. Functional areas of responsibility will include designing, developing, and maintaining tools used in film and TV production, software infrastructure tools, asset database tools, and studio-wide user interface frameworks. This position reports to a Director of R&D within the Lumière VFX group.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement and support various software using a range of languages, tools and third-party applications
- Lead projects with contributions from artists, producers and R&D
- Document, test and debug tools to ensure it meets requirements
- Design and implement solutions for current production workflow
- Collaborate with technical directors in determining the software and pipeline needs of current and future productions
- Interact with the IT Department with respect to operating, file, and network systems' issues
- Write clear documentations for tools/scripts
- Provide secondary technical support, training/tutorials to production staff
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge in the relevant fields
Qualifications
- MS or BS degree in Computer Science, Engineering or software related field
